  • 1. Description

    If you're not sure when you'd like to travel, the Flexi Pass is for you. Choose a certain number of days of train or Interislander ferry travel (minimum 3 days) and then use them whenever it suits, for up to 6 months from the date of purchase. This gives you ultimate flexibility is great value. You'll still need to book your travel days online or by phoning 0800 250 000 (in New Zealand), 24 hours prior to travel.

    Flexi Passes are valid for use up to 6 months from the date of purchase.

    Flexi Passes are valid for use up to 6 months from the date of purchase. All Scenic Rail Passes are valid for a seven or fourteen day period effective from the Pass Start Date and can be used for unlimited travel during this period on The TranzCoastal, The TranzAlpine and The Overlander services, depending on which pass has been  purchased. The Capital Connection is not included.  If applicable, the Pass can also be valid for one one-way Interislander ferry journey. 



  • 6. Terms and Conditions

    Essential Information about the Scenic Rail Pass:
    All Scenic Rail Passes are valid for a seven or fourteen day period effective from the Pass Start Date and can be used for unlimited travel during this period on The TranzCoastal, The TranzAlpine and The Overlander services, depending on which pass has been  purchased. The Capital Connection is not included.  If applicable, the Pass can also be valid for one one-way.

    Interislander ferry journey.  All passengers booked together on one rail pass must travel together at all times. All travel and seating is subject to availability. Photographic ID must be produced for all travel.

    To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to book travel on all the TranzScenic train services in advance. Information and reservations can be made by phoning ahead on the number provided with the pass.
    Bookings for Interislander ferries should also be made at least 24 hours prior to scheduled departure time. For ferry information and bookings, call the Customer Service Centre on the number provided with the pass.

    Cancellation and Refund Conditions

    Once issued all Scenic Rail Passes are non refundable and non transferable.
    Pass Voucher can be cancelled up to 48 hours before the start date as long as it has not been exchanged for the actual pass – once exchanged it is non-refundable/non-exchangeable.
    Please check-in at least 20 minutes prior to the departure time for all Tranz Scenic and Interislander Services.
    When travelling on the Tranzalpine, please ensure you have some items of warm clothing, particularly for the open viewing platform on the middle carriage.
    Passengers joining the train at stations en route must make themselves clearly visible to the driver. Trains may leave up to 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time if all pre-booked passengers are on board. To check for train delays call free on 0800 ARRIVAL (0800 277 482).
    The terms and conditions of travel are contained in the General Conditions of Carriage for Passenger Services of Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd (the General Conditions), a limited liability company. The General Conditions are available for inspection from Tranz Scenic.  All terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. Where terms and conditions are amended the terms and conditions in force when the ticket was purchased apply.
    Provisions in the General Conditions exclude or limit the liability of Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd for loss or damage to your property or suffered by you. We have summarized below some of the General Conditions. If anything in this information conflicts with the General Conditions, the General Conditions apply.

    Right to refuse carriage

    Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd may refuse to carry a person or property, cancel a ticket and any reservation made in respect of it or refuse carriage under a ticket when, in the exercise of its absolute discretion, Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd decides:
    (a) that action is necessary for reasons of safety; or
    (b) that action is necessary to prevent violation of any Other Law; or
    (c) that the conduct, age, mental or physical state, nature or condition (including intoxication) of a passenger or property, as applicable, may: (i) require special assistance from Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd or(ii) cause inconvenience, discomfort or objection to any other passenger; or(iii) involve any hazard or risk to any other passenger, person or property.

    Service Delay or Cancellation

    Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd is not responsible or liable for any loss, damage or expense incurred by passengers as a result of the failure of the service to operate or depart or arrive at the scheduled time or location. Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd reserves the right to change the service at any time.

    Luggage

    Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd advises passengers to insure all luggage and personal items.

    Checked Baggage

    Up to 2 items per person, maximum weight 30kg per person. Size must be no more than 200 linear cm (height plus length plus width). Extra luggage will be carried only if space is available at the cost of $10 per item per service. Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd reserves the right to refuse to carry non-standard luggage such as perishable items and household goods.

    Hand Baggage

    Each fare paying passenger may take on board one small handbag and or personal items such as camera, coat, umbrella. Passengers are asked not to leave personal items of value unattended at any time. Toll NZ Consolidated Ltd is not responsible or liable for the loss of items carried on board.

    Alcohol

    All Tranz Scenic trains are fully licensed throughout the journey. A range of alcoholic beverages is available for purchase. Passengers are prohibited from taking their own alcohol on board a Tranz Scenic service for consumption during travel. Passengers transporting alcohol (eg cases of wine) are asked to ensure it is carried in the luggage van.

    Animals

    No animals are permitted on Tranz Scenic trains other than seeing and hearing guide dogs.

    Bicycles

    Bicycles are charged at a rate of $10 per journey and are limited to one per passenger. Passengers are asked to book in advance as space is limited and transport of bicycles, which are not pre-booked is not guaranteed. Removal of pedals, folding of handlebars, covering of chain and all sharp edges may be requested.

    Other Large Objects

    Other large objects (eg surfboards) are charged at a rate of $10 per unit per journey and are carried only when space is available. There is a limit of one per passenger.

    Radios/Cassette Players

    Radios, cassette or CD players may be used only with earphones at a volume that cannot be heard by others. The operation of radio scanners is prohibited on board Tranz Scenic services by anyone other than Tranz Scenic staff.

    Smoking

    By law, all Tranz Scenic trains are designated non-smoking. Passengers may not smoke anywhere on board, including when outside on an open air viewing platform.

    Wheelchairs and Ramps

    Ramps to assist passengers to board are available on all trains. Ease of access varies according to the platform height at each station. Our staff are trained in supporting passengers during the journey. If you have specific requirements that may assist us to make your journey more comfortable please advise us. Any personal wheelchairs will be carried in our luggage van due to size constraints in the main carriage.
