  • 1. Description

    New in 2016 the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is a special discounted pass available only to travellers visiting Japan (with a short-term visa no longer than 90 days) and holding a non-Japanese passport. Within the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass valid area, this pass allows unlimited rides on the JR Hokkaido Lines and on JR East Lines.

    The JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is also convenient for travel from Narita or Haneda Airport to the general Tokyo region and from New Chitose Airport to greater Sapporo, the pass allows unlimited rides on the Shinkansen and limited express trains to move around Tokyo and reach such destinations as Aomori and Sendai. The pass can also be used on the Hokkaido Shinkansen which will start operation in March 2016! When traveling around Japan, the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is too good to miss out on!

  • 2. Eligibility

    So who is eligible for a Japan Rail Pass?

    You're eligible if you are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of"Temporary Visitor".

    "Temporary Visitor"entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for "sight-seeing, etc." If you apply for a "stay for sight-seeing" when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as"Temporary Visitor,"as shownhere. Only people who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a Japan Rail Pass.

    IMPORTANT:Even if you visit Japan with an Exchange Order, to be turned in for aJapan Rail Pass, the exchange cannot be made unless you have"Temporary Visitor"status: if you enter Japan under any other official status, such as "Trainee," "Entertainer," or "Reentry Permit," you cannot change the Exchange Order for aJapan Rail Pass. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law,"Temporary Visitor"status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.

    JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass is available exclusively for visitors from abroad who enter Japan under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor". Both of the below two conditions must be met for purchase and use.

    • The pass user must have a passport issued by a country other than Japan.
    • The pass user must enter Japan as a temporary visitor and have "Temporary Visitor" stamped in their passport (as shown below).
    • The status of temporary visitor is established in Japanese immigration law and permits stays in the country of up to 90 days for purposes such as sightseeing. Visitors desiring to enter Japan for sightseeing will receive a stamp (as shown below), saying "Temporary Visitor" in their passport from the immigration officer.


    • Confirmation of the passport entry stamp is required when making an exchange for or purchasing a JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass in Japan.
    • Without the proper passport stamp, the pass cannot be purchased and Exchange Orders cannot be exchanged. Also, please carry your passport when using your pass. It may be required by JR staff for identity confirmation.

    There is no saver fare available for this pass.

    6 days within 14 days

    The 14 day period that you get to use your 6 days starts when you exchange the voucher at the station in Japan.

    For example:
    On a voucher that is exchanged (and pass issued) on the 1st August you have 14 days (until 14th August) to use the 6 days of travel on any day within that period.

    • The starting date of the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass may not be changed.


    JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass Refunds

    • Refunds are available at JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass sales and exchange locations. The pass must be unused and the validity period cannot have started on the day the refund is made.
    • If the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass has clearly not been used, a refund may be made after the start of the validity period. In this case, a refund fee applies. However, if a reserved seat ticket was issued with the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass, no refund will be made after the departure time regardless of whether the pass has been used to ride a train.
    • The application/backing must be still attached to the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass to receive a refund.
    • Refunds are not made for cancelled or delayed train service (exceptions may be made for total system stoppages).


    Exchange Order refunds

    • An Exchange Order can be refunded only at the office where it was issued, within one year of the issue date. The refund will be subject to a 10% cancellation charge and relevant administration charges at the time of cancellation.



    • Lost Exchange Orders and JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Passes will not be reissued.
    • The JR East-South Hokkaido Pass may be used only by the person noted on the pass. Please carry your passport when using your pass. You may be required to show your passport by railway officials.
