***UPDATE ON GREEK RAIL TRAVEL***

Ever since the global economic downturn in 2008, Greece has effectively shut itself off from the rest of Europe in terms of rail services; this means that there are now no cross-border rail journeys into or out of Greece. This is because Greece has made massive rail cuts due to their ongoing poor economic situation. The only way to reach Greece via Europe is by ferry from Italy, or by bus from Sofia, Bulgaria.

If you are booking an InterRail or a Eurail pass, then you will not be able to use your rail pass to travel on international trains to and from Greece for the time being. However, domestic trains in Greece are operating as normal and rail passes can be used to travel on journeys within Greece.

Sales for international trains between Greece and Europe have been closed.

Tickets for domestic Greek train services can only be purchased once in Greece.
