History & Sightseeing

Are you a HISTORY buff? Are you into CASTLES AND MUSEUMS? Or TEMPLES AND CHURCHES? Do you like SEEING THE SIGHTS?

Why not voyage between some of the greatest paradores, schlosses and chateaux of Europe? Descartes said that: "Travelling is almost like talking to men from other centuries" - and you are in a position to make it so.

Some European trains (check out Spain's 'trainhotel') are now so well appointed that they truly offer the comforts of a 5* hotel, whilst whizzing you between stops on your itinerary. Or travel to one of the hotspots on Europe's Grand Tour - Potsdam, Dubrovnik, Florence, Carcassonne, or Santiago di Compostela for example - which are all absolutely jammed full of historic bits awaiting your perusal. Even if you travel in standard compartments your train journey will leave you feeling relaxed and ready for adventure... unlike certain other modes of transport we could mention. Or you could splash out on one of the great train journeys and book yourself on to the Venice-Simplon Orient Express...

If you want to venture further afield, treat yourself to a rail pass to tour the exquisite gardens and temples of Japan: the famous 'shinkansen' bullet trains over there will whisk you between sights in the blink of a beguiling oriental eye (and are perhaps an attraction in themselves).

What about the Wild West? Ever fancied seeing all those frontier posts of the movies? Even cowboys used the railroad on long journeys, and you should do the same. Fly, and you'll miss all that great scenery; drive and you'll just end up whacked - no sirree! Or why not try the Amtrak USA Rail Passes service down the East coast of America to visit all those historic towns from Boston to New Orleans.

Australia has more pre-history than history perhaps - it is a little light on castles for sure - but there are a myriad ghostly mining towns and former prisoners' colonies to explore. And there are of course all the usual historical attractions of the big cities. The train is a surprisingly efficient way to get around this vast land - it is but 20 hours from Adelaide to Alice Springs on the famous Ghan train to Darwin.
