The terms and conditions for the Japan Rail East Pass are as follows:

Refunds

Exchange Orders can be refunded by the issuing office, up to one year from
issue date. All refunds are subject to a 10% cancellation charge and a small
admin fee will be charged in addition to this.Duplicate exchange orders and rail passes cannot be issued if lost or stolen.

Eligibility

You must be a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad, under the entry status of "Temporary Visitor ".

Please note: Japanese citizens are not eligible to purchase the Japan Rail East Pass.

"Temporary Visitor" entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for "sight-seeing, etc."

If you apply for a "stay for sight-seeing" when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as "Temporary Visitor". Only persons who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a Japan Rail East Pass.

• The Japan Rail East Pass may only be used by the person whose name appears on the face of the PASS. Carry your passport at all times during your trip and be prepared to present it when requested.
• The starting date of validity of the Japan Rail East Pass cannot be changed.
• You may obtain a refund for your Exchange Order at the office that issued the Order within one year from the issue according to the regulation of each sales office.

A Japan Rail East Pass can be refunded at your nearest Japan Rail East Pass exchage/sales office in Japan only within the validity period and before the first date of use (in the case of the Flexible 4-day PASS, before the first date of use), with a 10% handling fee deducted from the refund. No refund can be made for any reason after the first date of use.

• Exchange Order and PASS cannot be reissued if it's lost or stolen. Be sure to keep it secure.
• Your PASS cannot be refunded, nor can the period of validity be extended, due to interruptions in train service, late departures or any other reason.
• These and other usage conditions are based on the Japan Rail East Passenger transportation regulations and Japanese laws. The validity of the Order before you exchange it for the Japan Rail East Pass is based on the regulations of the company that issues the Order.
• Any violation of these conditions of use and regulations will render the PASS void and your PASS will be confiscated. In the event of such violation, a fine of three times the fares and charges for all sections traveled shall be collected.
• The contents of this pamphlet are subject to change without notice. JR EAST will not make a refund or compensation in the event of such change.
