Passenger rail is one of the principal means of transport in the People's Republic of China, with approximately 1.5 billion railway trips taken each year. Chinese Railways are operated by the Ministry of Railways of the Peoples Republic of China.

China has recently redeveloped its entire railway network to produce a modern high speed system which currently covers approximately 91,000 kms, including over 8,000 kms capable of handling trains running at 200+ km/h.

Every train route has an identification number of two to five characters arranged by the Ministry of Railways. Trains are classified as up trains or down trains, and since Beijing is seen as the centre of the network, all services from Beijing are down services, while all services towards Beijing are up services.

Please see below for a route map of China Railways.

Trains that do not go to Beijing are up or down services based on whether they are going in the direction that goes towards or away from Beijing. Train routes that change from an up service to a down service while travelling in a certain direction might use two different numbers. For example a train from Qingdao to Xian begins as an up service as it travels towards Beijing and changes to a down service when it reaches the point where the travel is from Beijing.
